Choosing the right cover
Types of Car Insurance Cover Explained
If you want to drive your car on public roads, you need to have car insurance in place. This is a legal requirement for all motorists in the UK.
The level of insurance cover you buy is down to you and should reflect your personal circumstances and needs
There are three different levels of car insurance cover available in the market
Third Party Only, which covers injury and vehicle damage to the other party if you are involved in an accident that is deemed your fault. This level of cover doesn’t include cover for damage to your car.
Third Party, Fire and Theft cover, in addition to third party only, this type of car insurance protects your vehicle from damage caused by fire, theft and attempted theft. It also covers claims from a third party, if you’re involved in an accident.
Comprehensive cover, the highest level of car insurance cover. It provides third party, fire and theft and covers the cost of repairing or replacing your car if it's vandalised or involved in an accident.
LV= do not offer Third Party only cover.

Common questions about car insurance for over 70s
Can I get insured after 70?
Many insurers cover people over 70, though some might have restrictions in place. The Car Insurance available through us is provided by LV=, and has an age limit of up to 110. This means more people over the age of 70 can find protection through us.
Will I get a cheaper car insurance policy for being over 70?
Not necessarily. This is because your age is just one of the many factors that your over 70s car insurance quotes are based on. Whilst many providers will reward years of experience and lengthy no-claims periods, your overall premium price will also factor in considerations such as the type of car you drive and where you live.
Will my car insurance be affected by my health?
To ensure you have the right cover and to keep your car insurance valid, you must always inform your provider of any changes to your medical health.
After the age of 70, you must start renewing your driving licence every three years. This is to ensure that your medical information is up-to-date and being assessed correctly. You must always report medical conditions that could affect your driving to the DVLA as well as your insurance provider.
The price of your insurance and the options available to you might be impacted by certain conditions, but you could risk serious fines and/or prosecution if you fail to inform the right people.
You must ensure that your eyesight meets the legal requirements for driving. If you are prescribed glasses or lenses that enable you to see clearly whilst driving, then you must wear them, otherwise you could invalidate your insurance policy.
Why switch with us for over 70s Car Insurance?
The Car Insurance available through us is provided by LV=, and has a range of features and Optional Extras that might be right for you. As standard, drivers can benefit from a 24-hour claims helpline and up to £500 to continue your journey or get you to a safe place if needed. You can also choose to add Optional Extras, such as Guaranteed Hire Car cover, so you can find the level of protection right for you.
What’s more, you’ll join the thousands of customers who help us make a difference in older people’s lives. We were set up by Age UK to help fund their work and our profits go to the charity. In the last five years, more than £14m has been donated.

What is 'No Claim Discount' (NCD)?
No claim discount (NCD), also known as a No Claim Bonus, is a discount on your car insurance premium that your insurer may offer as a reward for not having made a claim against your policy. Typically, you earn one year of NCD for every year you don't make a claim on your car insurance. If you have more than 4 years of NCD, you can protect them by adding Protected No Claim Discount (PNCD) as an optional extra to your policy.
How can I get the maximum no claim discount?
If you have nine or more years no claim discount (NCD), you’ll be able to secure the maximum discount when taking out a new Car Insurance policy.
If I claim for windscreen damage, does it affect my NCD?
No. If you have taken out an LV= policy through us, windscreen claims won’t affect your no claim discount.
For example, if you get a chip in your windscreen and it needs to be repaired.
Can I protect my 'No-Claims Discount'?
Yes, you can add Protected No Claim Discount (PNCD) as an Optional Extra to your policy. That way, if you make a claim on your policy (and LV= can't recover their costs from the person or people who are at fault) your NCD won’t be lost or reduced.
Will pre-existing medical conditions affect my quote?
Having pre-existing medical conditions should not affect your quote, but UK law requires you to report certain conditions to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and, if they deem you to be unfit for driving, you will be refused cover.
Legally, you must be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres away to be able to drive, so it is advised to schedule regular eye tests to ensure your vision is at its best. You can schedule an eye test at the opticians. It is your responsibility to notify your insurance provider of any changes to your medical conditions that the DVLA need to be aware of, to ensure you are still covered under an existing policy.
What medical conditions do I need to tell my car insurance provider?
You don’t necessarily have to disclose a medical condition to your insurance provider. However, you are required by law to declare any conditions that affect your driving to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Here are a few examples of conditions you may need to alert the DVLA about:
- Epilepsy
- Strokes
- Some cancers
- Heart condition
- Hearing issues (only if you drive a bus, coach, or lorry)
- Eyesight issues
Do eyesight conditions affect car insurance?
If you’re long-sighted, short sighted, or colour blind, you won’t need to disclose this to your car insurance provider. But you must tell DVLA if you’ve got any other problem with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye. It is also a legal requirement that you wear glasses or contact lenses, if these have been prescribed.
Do I need to tell my car insurance provider I wear glasses?
No, you do not need to disclose whether you wear glasses to your car insurance provider. However, you are legally required to wear glasses or contact lenses while driving, if these have been prescribed. Failure to do so could mean you face prosecution. You may also invalidate your car insurance, which will mean you can’t make a claim, should you get into an accident.
Do I need a health check for car insurance?
No, you are not required to undergo a health check before getting an over 50s car insurance quote. However, if you have a medical condition that may affect your driving, you are legally required to alert the DVLA. Should your driving licence be revoked or suspended, you will then need to inform your insurance provider.
Is Motor Breakdown cover available?
Yes, you can add Motor Breakdown cover as an Optional Extra to your policy. Motor Breakdown is provided by Britannia Rescue.
Is Motor Legal cover available?
Yes, you can take out Motor Legal cover as an Optional Extra to your policy. Motor Legal cover protects you from the potential costs of legal action (up to £100,000) if you're involved in a car accident.
You can use Motor Legal cover to help you in a number of situations including:
- Taking action against a road user
- Defending yourself against a motoring prosecution
- Recovering any uninsured losses like personal injury compensation
- Loss of earnings or hire car costs while your vehicle is being fixed
What if my vehicle is ‘off road’ during winter or SORN?
If you are not currently using your car, or if you keep it laid up in a garage during the winter months, you can inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and obtain a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN). Vehicles with a SORN are not required to be insured while they remain off the road. It is important to note, however, that you could lose your No Claim Discount if you do not maintain a car insurance policy in your name for more than two years.
What's a Defaqto Star Rating?
Defaqto are a UK leading independent financial information business. The Car Insurance available through us is provided by LV= and has been given a 5 Star Rating.
Do I need to tell my car insurer if I retire?
You should always reach out to your car insurance provider if your personal circumstances have changed. In the case of retirement, you may even find the cost of your policy goes down, if it means you plan on driving less. Of course, occupation is just one factor that goes into determining the cost of your car insurance. Retirement may not make any changes to your policy, but it’s good practice to be open with your insurer.
Is there an age limit for breakdown cover?
There will be age limits in place for many car insurance products, including breakdown cover. These limits vary from provider to provider. At Age UK Trading, breakdown cover is provided by Britannia Rescue, which covers drivers up to the age of 110. However, all drivers will be subject to our provider’s Terms and Conditions and some vehicles may be excluded.
What is the average cost of car insurance for over 70s in the UK?
The average cost of over 70s car insurance is difficult to determine because there are a number of individual factors that determine the cost of your car insurance premium. This includes the type of car you drive, your personal claims history, the level of cover you choose to take, your mileage and the excess you are willing to pay in the event of a claim. Check out our guide to find out how to get your car insurance costs down.
Paying for your insurance
How can I pay for my Car Insurance?
You can pay by debit or credit card or by monthly or annual direct debit, provided you meet the affordability checks. If you need to speak about other ways to pay, please contact the team at LV=.
What are the benefits of auto-renewing?
Auto-renewal can offer you peace of mind that your insurance will remain in place when it comes to your renewal.
When you give your consent to auto-renew your policy, LV= will issue your renewal documents, which will include details of your cover and any associated costs and inform you that the policy will auto-renew without any need for you to make contact and confirm.
The consent will remain in force unless you change it, which you can do at any time, or if the policy is cancelled.
Your account and saved quotes
How do I know if I have an account?
You'll automatically have an account if you saved a quote or if you chose to sign up after buying a policy. Visit www.lv.com/ageco/car-insurance to log in to your account or set up a new one.
How long are my car insurance quotes saved for?
Your saved car insurance quotes are valid until the cover start date. You'll still be able to view them in your account after that point, but you won't be able to buy them. Simply start a new quote if your old one’s no longer valid.
I have forgotten my password for my car insurance quote and cannot retrieve it

If the email isn't in your inbox, please check your spam or junk folders, in case it's in there. If you still can't find it, you can re-set your password in My Account by clicking ‘Login’ and then the ‘I’ve forgotten my password’ link on the following page.
