Here’s our guide to some of the best Christmas markets to visit, alongside some practical travel inspiration to help make your winter wonderful.

Why Christmas markets remain one of Europe's most magical winter traditions

Christmas markets remain one of Europe's most magical winter traditions, and UK travellers are increasingly incorporating them into their holiday plans. European Christmas markets come with centuries of history. Dresden's Striezelmarkt dates from 1434, while Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik started life in 1570.

Today, Christmas fairs in Europe are a mixture of local food, festive drinks, music, crafts and seasonal traditions in beautiful public spaces. Most begin in mid-to-late November and finish around Christmas Day, although some continue into January.

The biggest Christmas markets in the world

There is no single official measure of the biggest Christmas market in the world (unless you’re talking about the largest glass of glühwein or the longest sausage). But Cologne and Dresden stand out for their sheer scale and breadth of stalls on offer.

Opening times: Around 11am-9pm, later on Fridays and Saturdays

Dresden, Germany

Opening times: Daily 10am-9pm; early close on Christmas Eve
Best for: Historic spectacle on a grand scale

Dating from 1434, the Saxon Striezelmarkt, with its huge walk-in Christmas pyramid, attracts more than 2 million visitors a year. Considered Germany’s oldest Christmas market, and with more than 200 stalls to explore, it’s no wonder Dresden has so many visitors.

Tips for visiting Christmas markets in Europe and the UK

  • Travel midweek: Mornings in the week are usually calmer than weekend evenings, with more room to browse and fewer queues.
  • Check accessibility: Historic centres will often have cobbles, slopes and temporary surfaces. Ask the tourist office about step-free routes, accessible toilets and rest areas.
  • Stay centrally: A nearby hotel makes it easier to rest, warm up and return after dark without a long transfer.
  • Dress for comfort: Wear waterproof, supportive footwear and several light layers. Take gloves that can be removed easily when paying.
  • Plan the journey: Review 2026 passport and travel-rule updates and try these easy exercises for safer air travel.
  • Protect the booking: Check what travel insurance covers, particularly medical treatment, cancellations and winter disruption.
  • Check food rules: Before buying edible gifts, be sure to read what food can be brought back into the UK.
  • Going independently: A solo trip can be just the ticket before the madness of the festive season. Our guide to solo travel in later life covers planning, confidence and safety.
